During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Carnival of Venice offered a singular vision of historical dance. Unlike court balls, dance was not a tool of hierarchy, but a space of freedom, playfulness and seduction.
Protected by the mask, bodies were liberated from social conventions. Masked balls, held in private palaces, theatres and the famous Ridotto, brought together nobles, artists and travellers in a theatrical and mysterious atmosphere.
